About St. James’ School

On the 29th of October, 1813, a man was born with a vision ‘that students irrespective of their language, colour or creed, should grow up in an institution devoid of racial prejudices and be able to express themselves fearlessly throughout life.’ Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton was that visionary whose spirited determination and relentless efforts lead to the establishment of the institution he envisioned- St. James’ School.

Established in 1864, St. James’ School has faced its share of plights and predicaments in the past, especially in the 1900s, but has risen from the depths it was thrown into due to the presence of eminent personalities spearheading the institution’s success.

The evergreen lessons that have been imparted will forever remain close to every Jacobean’s heart.

The Cotton House was named after the ever righteous Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton. The banner upon which bears the Knight, the Horse and the Snake represented his valor and honesty and taught us the motto- ‘Never Despair’.

The Copleston House, named after Bishop Reginald Stephen Copleston, is represented by the royal stance of the Lion. It helped us imbibe the paradoxical blend of bold leadership with the self-effacing values which symbolize the motto- ‘Duty Before Self’.

The Eagle soars high on the banner of the Lefroy House. Named after Bishop George Alfred Lefroy, it represents power, might and freedom and teaches us the motto- ‘Love Conquers All’.

Finally, the Westcott House, named after Bishop Foss Westcott, was adorned with the Dove which symbolized grace and worthiness. It represents the motto- ‘Work is Worship’.

St. James'Kolkata St. James’ School serves a greater purpose than just educating children about academics. This revered institution, where students enter as boys and leave as men, forges the future of India and nurtures the youth of the society. The values and morals left behind by our previous and current personalities still reverberate in the souls of every Jacobean as we bear the torch of our legacy for God and for the Country!
